This comic published in 1998 is excellent both for its expressive graphics by Jacques Ferrandez and well structured storyline by Tonino Benacquista. Richard Selena is a policeman who binges all the time and is hugely overweight; while solving a case he finds a way of solving his problems but there is some compromise involved. The way it sets loneliness, crime, and desire in a taut farrago of lines and speech bubbles is very good; true to so much in the noir category, it suggests that compromise is always there, that the moral universe is made up of shades of grey. I would have preferred it to be less compromised, but it is nevertheless a touching comic to read and has a certain amount of soul about it, and a stark bigger picture gradually emerges. It would make a good film; but the gradual weight loss that takes place over the year of the narrative would be impossible to achieve, making it really a comic through and through. This is art that is truly conceived in the medium.
